In the visions of God He brought me into the land of Israel and set me on a very high mountain, and on it to the south there was a structure like a city.

…. and the name of the city from that day shall be, ‘The Lord is there.’”

Ezekiel 40:2, 48:35 (NASB)

On the 19th December last year I posted Jehovah Jireh, my first in what I hoped to be a series on the names of God. It was today’s name that had touched my heart deeply that gave birth to the series. Indeed I have been counting the days until when I could share this post, after the festive season. This name really does excite my heart brethren; ‘The Lord is there’ to me speaks of Him who goes first, preparing the way for His children. Wherever we go in this world, He is there before us!

Ezekiel was writing in the times of Israel’s Babylonian exile; Jerusalem and the Holy Temple had lay in ruins for twenty-five years. It would have come as a shock to the people who were slaves in a foreign land to hear Ezekiel prophecy of their homeland’s restoration. The full glory of the city promised was never fully realised, yet there are parallels between Ezekiel’s prophecy and the New Jerusalem described in Revelation 21.

Dear Reader, as children of God what greater thing could we possibly hope for than that our Father God would be with us? He sent His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour to redeem us from this world, and also promised He would never leave us (Matthew 28:20). The promise to be with us is repeated by God our Father in His Word in Hebrews 13:5. Furthermore, He promises His children to be with them in that glorious New Jerusalem someday (Revelation 21:3) – what a joyful promise!

The Lord is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.
Deuteronomy 31:8

  1. Indeed, where Jehovah is, He is making the way before us. In my study of Jehovah names, I use this name to describe his role as our Friend. There is no conflict with your interpretation, just a different slant. I have the eight Jehovah names as they relate to people on pages in my blog. They are under the menu as Jehovah Names. I invite you to check them out and delight me with additional insight or correct me if I need corrected. https://onetahayes.com/jehovah-shammah-my-friend/
