There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him.

John 1:6-7 (NASB)

I remember as a lad being called as a witness in Dunfermline Sherriff Court, in the case of a driver who had hit and seriously injured my friend. The accident was traumatic as was the court case for all concerned. There have been other times in life where I have been a witness or even called a witness to my defence, allbeit in less important circumstances. In each occasion the integrity of the witness statement or even the character of the witness is questioned. In today’s Bible reading the purpose of John the Baptist stood out in my mind; “he came as a witness…”

John the Baptist was called as God’s witness, to testify about His Son the Messiah. Everything about John made him stand out from the crowd; his parents, birth and lifestyle to name but three aspects. It was the hallmarks of him being the best kind of witness; one called by Almighty God. There was no questioning of John’s integrity that stuck, it was clear to many who met him that he was a man sent by God.

Dear reader, God is still calling witnesses today to speak with men for Him. As F.B. Meyer says, “Men are still sent from God, as John was, to bear witness to Jesus.” Every generation of God’s children have brought forth witnesses for the Gospel of Salvation, some famous and some not so but all are equally important in the service of God their Father. Is He calling you today to bear witness for Him; who can you share the Good News of God’s love with today?

  1. John’s greatest witness statement was when he burst from the pages of history and proclaimed when he saw Jesus (his cousin) and realized WHO He really was, Behold! the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. (after millions of sacrificial lambs and shed blood on altars) NOW……one Holy and eternal sacrifice. The blood of the shed LAMB for the whole world…..every tribe colour and country………not just Israel. All must now come and follow only Him.

    1. It was new to me too Faye. It never fails to amaze me when I finish writing a devotional I open YouTube and usually the very first song is a perfect match for the message.
