General Assembly Hall of The Church of Scotland

You have ordained Your precepts,
That we should keep them diligently.

Psalm 119:4 (NASB)

Yesterday was a sad day in Scotland, and indeed in the whole of Christendom. Although it comes as no surprise, The Church of Scotland General Assembly voted 274/136 to allow ministers and churches to conduct same sex marriages within Scottish churches. As a layman with no Biblical education except what the Spirit has taught me over the years I am astounded that the appointed guardians of the Gospel in Scotland could stoop to such disobedience against God’s Word. As suggested it comes as no surprise; the Church of Scotland has been on the road of surrender to sinful humanity over many years – this today though is a new low point.

I could quote many scriptures that call believers to obedience of God’s Word, but I choose familiar verses from Psalm 119. It is clear even in these that His Word is ordained, that we should keep them diligently! It never was or is it a debate or a choice; the whole Word of God is our ultimate authority and must be obeyed.

Dear reader, will you please pray for my beloved Scotland? Pray that God will have His way over this surrender of the Church of Scotland; that His Spirit will sweep through our land convicting many of their sin and need of a Saviour and a Holy God.

You hit the nail on the head, brother. The Word of God should be our ultimate authority. God’s clear commands are not up for debate.

  2. Oh Alan, I grew up in the United Methodist Church and they not only perform same-sex marriages but allow openly gay people to be pastors. It breaks my heart when the church chooses to follow the world instead of working to win their souls! πŸ’”πŸ™βœοΈπŸ’”πŸ™βœοΈπŸ’”πŸ™βœοΈ

  3. Reblogged this on His eye is on the sparrow and commented:
The Church of Scotland has fallen, surrendering to this darkening world.
If all institutional churches fall, once avowing Christ, now rejecting him, we will never surrender. Suppose Christ removes His worldwide church from the faltering hands of man’s leadership and takes control of it Himself from the air. In that case, we will follow with a fixed fortitude by His grace. We will continue to worship Him in spirit and truth. We will worship on the beaches and in the fields. On the hills and in the forests, primeval. And in the caves underground until His return. We shall never surrender.

  4. Alan, I pray for all of us. I keep my eyes on God and trust He will burn away everything not of God’s love to draw from George MacDonald. It will take God correcting all our sinful ways and He will in His wisdom and time. Take heart…look to Him and His timing.

  5. Yes, Alan, I will pray, even as I am praying for my church in the US – located in Michigan.
What we are seeing in the Churches here in America is worse than the church of Laodicea, mentioned in the Book of Revelation. I have been grieved for several months because the church I have worshiped and served the Lord in for decades suddenly began to look like the world. The Apostles Creed and the Lord’s Prayer rarely, if ever, recited in the worship service now. Prayers being “read from scripted paper” by the Elders standing at the pulpit instead of from their heart. Special music (solos, etc.) taken out…all of it! Including the choir. Pastors sometimes preaching in sloppy jeans. The robes once worn by former pastors now hang in the basement collecting dust. People bringing McDonald’s coffee into the sanctuary. I hardly sense the Holy Spirit while sitting in the pew. It seems my best worship is at home now. I do not believe our doctrine against gay marriage has been altered at my church, however, the lack of reverence and respect for the Lord may lead to that. I know your grief. Every Christian should be praying for the Church. Our Lord promised that the gates of hell would not prevail against it, but Satan is surely trying to destroy it.

    1. Indeed these are sad days in the church worldwide Mary, most of them are on the same evil roller coaster but at different stages. It must be heartbreaking to see your church go that way sister. May our Father God guide us all .

  6. Ian Hamilton’s presentation was very encouraging to me and timely. As he said, “We must put truth before consequences… Faithfulness brings difficulty…May God help us in these sad and bewildering times to be men and women who…put the truth first, who refuse to conform to the times.” Thanks for posting this. I join you in prayer for Scotland and the world. Blessings, Alan!

  7. Count me in for praying too! I am always dumbfounded when any church picks and chooses what part of the Word of God they want to believe, and disregard the rest. It makes me sad for those leaders when they stand before the Lord!

  8. Sad day but also a day to take a stand. That the world has entered in to control our organizations and buildings is no surprise. It is time to step outside and simply stand for Jesus Christ in our homes our neighborhoods and community. God hasn’t fled the scene!

  9. Alan, we are seeing many denominations being ripped asunder over the homosexual agenda. I know of at least four denominations that have separated into two groups with one group allowing homosexual marriages as well as active homosexuals to be ministers and administrators, while the other follows biblical doctrine. It is a sad state that Satan has lead many to believe.

  10. My heart grieves for you as this pattern of disobedience to God’s Word continues world-wide. Here in our small community we have seen denomination after denomination not obeying the precepts of God and more and more becoming socially acceptable. lack of the leading of GOD the HOLY SPIRIT with many. churches even selling properties later converted to mosques etc. (for money) This is a sure indication of end times coming. ONE pure holy bride for the Son and a returning mighty SAVIOUR and His Redeemed after Armageddon . Revelations being fulfilled in our day. My heart mourns for loss but knows the remnant must STAND for the Word and for HIM.
