But some of these branches from Abraham’s tree—some of the people of Israel—have been broken off. And you Gentiles, who were branches from a wild olive tree, have been grafted in. So now you also receive the blessing God has promised Abraham and his children, sharing in the rich nourishment from the root of God’s special olive tree.  Romans 11:17 (NLT)

One of my enduring memories of my childhood is our home in the coal mining village of Dundonald, a small village on a hillside looking past the railway bridge down into neighbouring Bowhill. What made our home special was our garden created by my dad. In the summer months it was awash with the colours of roses, the sweet scents wafting throughout the neighbourhood and the constant buzz of bees. Roses were a serious business to Dad, the catalogues were studied for the new arrivals in early Autumn followed quickly by the farmers trailer of manure. Each year he would also propagate his own roses, grafting his favourites onto the root of vibrant hosts. I often watched him perform what was very like surgery, which always produced beautiful healthy roses.

As I pondered these distant memories I remembered today’s chosen verse from Romans 11. Instead of a rose bush the host plant is a metaphorical Olive tree – Israel, God’s chosen nation. Christians redeemed in Christ are the introduced cuttings, firmly implanted into the original Chosen Root of Jesse. In Christ we are not just redeemed but implanted into His Davidic family, sharing the same blood. In grafting unfruitful branches are removed before the graft is implanted, in this case unbelieving Jewish branches. We must not despair for them though, a time is coming when many will return in the coming final days when they will recognise Yeshua as their Messiah – hallelujah!

Dear reader, this may be Monday famous for being a grim day in the world – but here is my chosen elixir of Divine Joy to lift our hearts into jubilation today. We as children of God, saved through Christ, are grafted into the original root of His Chosen People for Eternity!

  • Being Content
Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with…
  • Chosen
You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would…
  • Consecration
Then Joshua said to the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.”…
