This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil,
Hebrews 6:19 (NASB)

I had a light bulb moment at church last Sunday morning as we hummed along to “Christ The Sure and Steady Anchor” by Matt Boswell. I must confess I love nautical themes, especially in spiritual matters. But in this worship song, which was new to me, I had a flash of inspiration from one line in particular: “This my ballast of assurance, see His love forever proved.

Ballast is heavy material, such as gravel, sand, or iron, placed in the bilge of a ship to ensure its stability on the ocean. This had me asking the question, what is our ballast? Christ is the Anchor of our soul, our personal faith in Him as our Lord and Saviour is our ballast. The stormy waves of life cannot capsize those who have faith in Christ as their stabiliser. Dear reader, how is your ballast? Are you sure and steady in the Saviour?

Let us pray: Dear Father God, thank You for Your love for me. I can never be grateful enough for Christ, my Lord and Saviour – my Anchor. Keep my life on a steady course Heaven bound, stable in life’s storms as I depend on You. Guide and encourage me today as I follow You. Amen.

  1. Thank you for this post Alan. As I woke up this morning, I was feeling a little overwhelmed with my “first world problems” and needed to be reminded that Christ is our anchor. Have a blessed day!

      1. He is marvellous! I receive a daily verse and today’s was Jeremiah 17:7 – “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence.”
        He is timely!

  2. Thank you for this precious reminder today! What an encouraging thought to remember–Christ is our solid ballast. I have never thought of it in that way either. In the storms, He will keep us so secure! Blessings to you.

  3. Hi, Alan, is this a wonderful new website you have? Everything looks so different – very smart, clear and attractive. Plus, the new ways of liking and replying work so well. I’d be very interested to know the name of this new theme. Sending my love and encouragement XXXX

    1. I am pleased you like the website Ruth, although I have not changed anything recently. The theme I have used from the beginning is Libretto if that is helpful. God bless you sister.

  4. I love Hebrews 6:19! Apart from Christ, hope is merely wishful thinking. But Jesus is the ultimate ballast for our souls. What a great analogy. It could also be said that Christ is the keel—the long fin underneath a ship that help keeps it upright.

Blessings, brother! I shared a post Saturday about letting Christ’s light shine through us. Did you see it?

    1. Thank you for your valuable input brother. Yes, the keel is also a good analogy of our Saviour…I never thought of that one.
Did I miss your blog? I must go hunt it down. Sorry if I have missed it brother.

    1. Thank you Jim. It is unusual how they have become important to me in my faith over the years, I do not live on the coast or been a sailor/fisherman at anytime. Although I did support the work of the sailor’s mission service and even considered a post with them once.
