And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise. Galatians 3:29 (NASB)
Today is jewel number four mentioned in The Jewels of Faith a few days ago. In the previous three posts we have discussed our adoption by Almighty God, our baptism with Christ and, our unity in the family of believers. Today I write about our connection to Abraham!
According to conservative estimates over two thousand years ago when Abram was ninety-nine years old, God spoke to him. In Genesis 15:4-5 God told Abram that a cousin would not be his heir, but that he would be the father of many. That his descendants would be as numerous as the stars. Again in Genesis 17:1-8 God speaks to make a covenant with Abram, if he lived a blameless life and walked with God he would be rewarded. Almighty God made a solemn promise that Abram would be the father of many nations, as a seal on this Abram would be renamed Abraham meaning “father of many.” This was to be an everlasting covenant, a forever promise that only God Almighty could fulfill.
Fast forward to Paul’s letter to the Galatians where we find our text today. In this we find exemplary proof that God keeps His forever promises, in this case to Abraham. Through Christ our Saviour, who was a descendant of Abraham by flesh, we also are descendants of the patriarch. He is the father of all Jews, Arabs and Christians. By the power of a promise made over two-thousand years ago by Almighty God we are heirs of the greatest mortal man in Jewish history.
Dear reader, I don’t know about you but, this totally thrills my heart. We are descendants of Abraham! No matter what satan may throw at us, we can smile in the knowledge of our esteemed lineage. This is truly a great reward, a precious jewel of faith in Christ.
