The wicked death of George Floyd and the aftermath have brought much sadness and rage into our world. Any right thinking person would sympathise with the Floyd family and those victimised purely for the colour of their skin, these are acts of evil without any doubt. But from this tragedy has arisen a call to white people to ask forgiveness for their ancestors sins and “take a knee” in humility. This has led me to ponder this act of humility, what does it mean to kneel?

As a christian my source of knowledge is God Almighty and His Word, the Bible. There are only five verses relating to kneeling and twenty-three to bowing down in the entire Bible. The vast majority of these refer to kneeling/bowing to God or His Son Jesus. In the ten commandments in Exodus we are specifically warned not to worship other Gods, or to bow down to them, for our God is a jealous God. If we kneel before men, we are giving what is reserved for God to His creation.

As children of God let us in these tough days exercise love and humility to all people, of any colour, creed or race. Let us not look down on others or be puffed up in pride but instead follow the example of Christ, in love and humility.

“Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.” Philippians 2:1-4.

  1. This is spot-on! I am feeling more than ever before a tug in my spirit that God wants something of great love and humility from His people during this time of protests and unrest. May we who name the name of Christ be sensitive to God and to those who are confused and hurting, and are seeking for something to fill their lives.
